There’s a Scientific Number for How Often You Should Clean Your Home

On Media Outlook News: They say cleanliness is next to godliness, and if you’re not one to subscribe to a higher power … we’d venture to guess that you still somewhat value the practice.

How clean a person is is usually determined by their lifestyle, but according to science, there is a magic number of how often you should clean and disinfect certain areas of your home.

According to research conducted by Popular Science, you should change your bed linen and wipe down the bathroom at least once a week, swap out your bathroom towels daily and your kitchen towels weekly, disinfect the sink daily and clean your rugs/floors every one to two weeks.

Researchers cite health concerns as the motivating factor for cleaning your home this often, with some food bacteria being able to live as long as 24 hours in your kitchen.

“Simple hand-washing can greatly reduce your risk of picking up germs,” said Philip Tierno, director of microbiology and diagnostic immunology at the New York University School of Medicine.

If this article has sent your germophobia over the edge, fear not. Tierno states that using a disinfectant on high-traffic surfaces such as doorknobs and kitchen sinks can help eliminate germs.
