Jury: Clarke, ex-sheriff in Milwaukee, didn't violate speech

Image
On Media Outlook News:  MILWAUKEE (AP) — Former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke did not violate a man's free speech with taunting Facebook posts after detaining him at an airport last year for shaking his head at Clarke while boarding a flight, a federal jury concluded Monday night. In a civil lawsuit against Clarke, Daniel Black argued he received hateful messages and was fearful after Clarke called him a "snowflake" online and said Black "wouldn't be around to whine" if the then-sheriff really wanted to harass him. Clarke made the comment after Black complained to the county that the sheriff had his deputies detain and question him for 15 minutes after he got off the plane in Milwaukee. Jurors deliberated nearly three hours before deciding Clarke's posts were not enough to chill Black's future speech. Clarke resigned on Aug. 31 to join a political action committee that supports President Donald Trump. Black said he shook his head ...

The fiancee of George Papadopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser to President Donald Trump who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI last year, said there’s a lot the public doesn’t know yet.  “There’s a lot to come,” Simona Mangiante told The Washington Post. “He was the first one to break a hole on all of this.”  She didn’t give details, but said Papadopoulos would be remembered as the John Dean of the Russia scandal.  Dean was White House counsel for President Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal, and ultimately cooperated with prosecutors. Papadopoulos served as a foreign policy adviser to the 2016 Trump campaign. However, after news broke that he was cooperating with spe...

Government shutting down amid partisan standoff

Image
On Media Outlook News:  WASHINGTON — The government careened toward shutdown Friday night in a chaotic close to Donald Trump’s first year as president. An eleventh-hour effort to stave off the shutdown for four weeks appeared to fall well short in the Senate, and lawmakers preemptively traded blame as the midnight deadline neared. Enough senators voted against a stopgap measure to ensure the closure of all but essential operations nationwide. But the Republican-led Senate was holding the vote open as nearly an hour ticked by and the midnight hour neared, seemingly accommodating the numerous discussions among leaders and other lawmakers away from the chamber’s floor. Up to that point, Democrats largely held together to block the funding legislation, digging in on their insistence that the spending bill include protections for some 700,000 younger immigrants facing deportation. After hours of heated closed-door meetings and phone calls, including with the White House, the...

Trump claims credit for what is still mostly Obama's economy

Image
On Media Outlook News:  WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump relentlessly congratulates himself for the healthy state of the U.S. economy, with its steady growth, low unemployment, busier factories and confident consumers. But in the year since Trump's inauguration, most analysts tend to agree on this: The economy remains essentially the same sturdy one he inherited from Barack Obama. Growth has picked up, but it's not yet clear if it can sustain a faster expansion. Hiring and wage growth actually slowed slightly from Obama's last year in office. Consumers and businesses are much more optimistic, but their spending has yet to move meaningfully higher. "I don't see any noticeable break over the past year," said Michael Strain, an economist at the conservative American Enterprise Institute. "We tend to overstate the degree to which the president has the ability to control the economy." The U.S. public appears to have a similar view...

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says "nobody should try to impede" special counselor Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election

Image
On Media Outlook News: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says she has confidence in special counsel Robert Mueller and believes "nobody should try to impede" his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. "He is a terrific person, straight shooter," Rice said of Mueller in a wide-ranging conversation with David Axelrod on "The Axe Files," which aired at 7 ET Saturday night. "I think he'll -- he will push to a conclusion. I don't have any idea what it will be. I hope, frankly, it's over pretty soon, because we need to get on with our business." When asked about Trump's characterization of the Russia probe as a hoax, Rice said: "Well, the President shouldn't call it a hoax. Let's just say that. But the fact is we will get to the bottom of what happened. I hope that there are people spending as much time trying to figure out exactly how the Russians did what they did." Asked if...

Classy Clapback! CNN’s Angela Rye Checks Sen. Rick Santorum Real Quick: “See, what you won’t do is…

Image
On Media Outlook News : E arlier today, on CNN Newsroom, journalist and political commentator  Angela Rye had to put former Senator Rick Santorum gently in his place. It all started during a roundtable style conversation regarding a report of President Trump’s work day, which is said to require three hours of “downtime,” to do, well, absolutely nothing (and we’re excluding his sleep hours). That might explain all the time on his hands to tweet until his thumbs get calloused. Anyway, Rye reacted to the report, suggesting that Trump could use his time more effectively and productively, while also saying he’s making the oval “office a disgrace.” Santorum, went on to say that Rye’s comments were “disqualifying,” to which the journalist did what she does best — and that’s speak up and talk back. #PressPlay: #AngelaRye does not ever come to play 😫 She said let me read y’all real quick! On Media Outlook News:  The president of CBS News said veteran anchor   Charlie Rose   had been fired from the CBS Corp. unit after allegations that he had harassed former female employees at his production company surfaced Monday in a news report. “A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately. This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program,” said CBS News President David Rhodes in a memo to staffers issued Tuesday. “Despite Charlie’s important journalistic contribution to our news division, there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace—a supportive environment where people feel they can do their best work,” Rhodes said. “We need to be such a place.” More to come

Between Trump and the nuclear button

Image
On Media Outlook News:  Washington -  The top US nuclear commander said Saturday he would push back against an order from President Donald Trump for a nuclear strike if it were "illegal." Speaking at the Halifax International Security Forum in Nova Scotia, Canada, Gen. John Hyten, who is the commander of US Strategic Command, shared what would happen if he were ordered to launch a nuclear strike. "I provide advice to the President," Hyten said. "He'll tell me what to do, and if it's illegal, guess what's going to happen? I'm gonna say, 'Mr. President, that's illegal.' Guess what he's going to do? He's going to say, 'What would be legal?' And we'll come up with options of a mix of capabilities to respond to whatever the situation is, and that's the way it works. It's not that complicated."
