#ChurchToo Hashtag Emerges in Light of Sexual Assault Claims

On Media Outlook News: We have heard of the #MeToo campaign, but now the #ChurchToo hashtag has emerged where those who have been sexually assaulted by members of the cloth are speaking out.

TIME reports that Hannah Paasch and Emily Joy kicked off the hashtag, which prompted Twitter users to share their stories of sexual abuse experienced in the church.

Growing up in purity culture, I was taught that men were “visual creatures” that couldn’t help feeling aroused at the sight of slightly revealed ankles or knees, and that all men were imagining me naked 24/7. The entire system shamed women for even existing. #ChurchToo

When I think of the horror of #churchtoo I recall being taught in church that 1 corinthians 7:3-5 meant wives should always have sex when their husbands want it. Despite how they feel.

By urging those who have been abused and sexually assaulted in church settings, the hashtag’s founders hope to bring awareness and voices to an issue that goes largely unaddressed.
