NAACP: Black Student Had Noose Put Around Neck

Image
Mississippi’s NAACP chapter says white students at a south Mississippi high school put a noose around the neck of a Black student and “yanked backward.” Ayana Kinnel is a spokeswoman for the civil rights group. She said the incident took place the afternoon of Oct. 13 at the Stone County High School field house in Wiggins. The group said in a statement that officials have mishandled the situation. The NAACP said no one has been charged with a crime, and the student’s parents have not told of any punishment for the other students involved. “They failed to protect this student throughout this ordeal,” the NAACP said. “Allowing students to commit blatant hate crimes without severe consequences, sends a message to students that their safety and well-being are not valuable enough to be protected.” Mississippi has long struggled with a history of racial division. It is the only state that still incorporates the Confederate battle emblem on its state flag. In 2014,

SICKLE CELL DISEASE: BEATING THE ODDS

Image
Welcome to Doctors’ Notes, our newest contribution from Urban Health correspondents and husband and wife physicians Dr. Rob and Dr. Karla Robinson.  The dynamic duo will be fielding questions about health, as it relates to African Americans.   Although it affects approximately 1 out of every 365 children born in the African-American community, sickle cell disease remains a health issue that is often misunderstood. As a 38-year-old female living with sickle cell disease, Ensia Yaisreal is on a mission to change that.  Once believing she would never live beyond 21 years of age, Yaisreal now knows she’s living a life of purpose to be a voice for those affected by this disease. Sickle cell disease, is a genetic condition that affects the shape and function of red blood cells. Red blood cells, normally round in shape, are responsible for carrying oxygen to the organs and tissues in the body. When people have sickle cell disease, their red blood cells are crescent shaped or “sick

It’s not what I grew up listening to. Obama: Issa 'not somebody who is serious about working on problems'

Image
President Barack Obama directed harsh criticism at Rep. Darrell Issa at a fundraiser Sunday in La Jolla, California, claiming the former House Oversight Committee chairman's "primary contribution to the US Congress has been to obstruct and to waste taxpayer dollars on trumped up investigations that have led nowhere." Obama lashed out at Issa, who after years of challenging the President, is now touting his cooperation with the White House in a campaign mailer featuring an Obama photo. The Democratic candidate challenging Issa for his Southern California district -- Doug Applegate -- was in attendance at the $10,000-a-plate-and-up fundraiser. "This is now a guy who because (Donald) Trump's poll numbers are bad has sent of brochures with my picture on them touting his cooperation on issues with me," Obama said. Yes, Male Victims of Domestic Violence Exist & It’s Time to Talk About It

Image
ctober is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and although we are making important progress in combating this kind of violence—through  legislation  and  public conversations  alike—there is still a great deal of work to be done. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence ( NCDAV ), nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by their partner in the United States, with intimate partner violence accounting for 15 percent of violent crimes committed. And although most are aware that 1 in 3 women will experience intimate partner violence within their lifetime, not enough people know that 1 in 7 men also experience this kind of violence too. In fact, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline ( NDVH ), “One in 10 men have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner.” We simply don’t talk enough about male victims of domestic abuse—whether that abuse is physical, mental, emotional or financial. And if we a
