TRAP GARDEN AIMS TO GIVE MORE URBAN COMMUNITIES THE OPTION OF HEALTHY EATING

On Media Outlook News: On a consistent basis, we all hear about the importance of healthy eating.
Many people are making lifestyle changes in the form of their eating habits and are opting to go vegan or vegetarian. There has been criticism that a person being able to become a vegan or vegetarian has a lot to do with their access to food and the types of grocery stores in their area.
Well, one young man is working to give more urban communities the option of healthy eating without having to depend on grocery stores.
Robert “Rob Veggies” Horton is an urban farmer and community health activist who created the Trap Garden in February 2014. Horton is a native of St. Louis and moved to Nashville to attend Tennessee State University. While a student, he became frustrated with having to drive miles away from his home for a grocery store that had quality fresh products. He joined his alma mater’s community garden and thus the Trap Garden, a non-profit organization, was born. With the Trap Garden, Horton grows his own vegetables and herbs and provides assistance to others who do not have direct access to fresh and healthy products.
The Trap Garden is my solution to helping urban communities grow fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables. I want people in our communities to have an OPTION to choose between a bag of chips and an apple. We all deserve that option…lets show them that we can create change
The mission of the Trap Garden is to help build, sustain and empower low-income communities by assisting in the creation of community gardens and the promotion of healthy eating. The organization aims to increase the availability and access to healthy foods in food deserts across the country, decrease the costs of healthier foods and engage the public on nutrition, environment, diversity and civic responsibility in cooperation with local schools, libraries and other organizations.
Horton describes the Trap Garden saying, “The Trap Garden is my solution to helping urban communities grow fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables. I want people in our communities to have an OPTION to choose between a bag of chips and an apple. We all deserve that option…lets show them that we can create change.”
The Trap Garden has done several community service projects in the Nashville area where they have partnered with schools and community centers to teach children about healthy eating and gardening.
