Mom spoke to son minutes before fatal crash

Prompted by a "bad feeling," Cynthia Hartwick called her son, Deqouya Carroll, about 9:15 p.m. Saturday. He told her he and his friend were riding bikes and he had something to tell her when he got home.

"I love you. Bye," he added, Hartwick said. Minutes later, Deqouya was dead, along with best friend Mark Wittrock, both 14 and freshmen at Churchill High School in Livonia. The boys died in a high-speed crash on Plymouth Road, west of Haggerty, in Plymouth Township; police say the 1985 Ford Mustang Deqouya was driving struck another vehicle, spun, left the road and caught fire.
