Bullet Whizzes Past Sleeping Couple In Humboldt Park: 'It's 'Really Scary'

CHICAGO — A Humboldt Park couple is still in shock after a bullet flew through their home, crashing into the wall just inches above where they slept.
Dave, who asked not to have his last name used out of safety concerns, said he and his wife were sleeping when they heard loud noises at 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Unsure what had happened, he got up after a few minutes and looked around his house in the 1200 block of North Kedzie, checking windows to see if they had been shot.
Dave didn't see anything right away. It wasn't until he got up again at 8 a.m. and pulled back the curtains in his bedroom that he found a hole in the window and in the wall above the bed where he and wife had been sleeping.
He found the bullet on the floor.

"It's just kind of scary," Dave said on Wednesday. He said he filed a police report and told neighbors about the shooting, but he was unnerved by how many people said they'd experienced something similar, realizing, "Other people have had this happen, too."
"You're kind of a little bit numb to it," Dave said, referencing other shootings in the city. "And then [after this] you're like, 'Wow, that is really scary. Wow, what if that hit one of us?' It really resonates a lot more."
Just one bullet came through the house, Dave said, but a neighbor told him he heard a few shots, a pause and then more shots. They don't know what was behind the gunfire.
While Dave is "flipped out" and trying to raise awareness of the incident, his wife is even more worried, he said. She's been researching bulletproof panels.
"She's worried maybe a bullet will come through our window and hit her or our dog," Dave said. "She's really upset by it.... .
"She's more flipped out, I guess. I guess I'm flipped out about it, but I'm like, 'It's a random gunshot, stray bullet, wasn't meant for us,'" Dave said. "Hopefully lightning only strikes once in the same place."
